Picture Books as Art
Illustrators are artists.
They are usually the first artists children get to know. Many of you might have had an illustrator or author/illustrator whose work you loved and sought out.
The original illustrations of a book might be done in any number of mediums and are often highly prized pieces.

Museum Collections of Picture Books
In the US, the main museum for picture book art is the Eric Carle Museum in Amherst, Massachusetts. The museum features many rotating exhibits. Currently, they are featuring two different digital exhibits.

Individual Artist Exhibits
Many exhibits have been curated featuring the work of one artist, such as this exhibit from a decade ago that ran at New York’s Jewish Museum about husband and wife, H.A and Margaret Rey, the creators of Curious George. Many of these exhibits will show you concept drawings and sketches and other works that the artists created. For example, a recent Maurice Sendak exhibit at the Morgan Library in Manhattan, focused on his set design work for the theatre which complemented his illustration/book work.
What do you think? Would you go to an exhibit of children’s book art? Is there an artist you would want an original illustration from?
